Bâtiment Basse consommation (BCC) – Latest regulatory building standard
Following on from the stringent 2005 Thermal Regulation (RT2005) which aimed at reducing building energy consumption through improved thermal heating insulation and heating systems the new stricter “Bâtiment Basse Consommation” Norme will become regulatory standards in 2013. This new legislation requires new build properties to be ecologically friendly starting with the design and architecture of the developments (bioclimatic architecture). Improved insulation and waterproofing and a larger amount of electricity to be provided from renewable sources are also top of the agenda. The electricity consumption of a new BBC property is averaged at 50kWh (kilowatt hour) per sq. m per annum compared to 151 to 230kWh per sq. m per annum with the current RT2005. A large number of French developers are already integrating the new requirements in their building specification. Combined with the 0% interest loan facilities in place for the purchase of BBC properties the ecological trend is gathering momentum securing France’s leading position in environmental and green development issues.
